Ru: Will, Steve, thank you for your time today. First question: What makes a good club event?
Steve: Good people, great music, venue, lights, sound system, staff, security. Easy really isn’t it?
Will: Yeah, it's everything combined, working together:
The Music
The Crowd
The Sound
The Lighting
The Visuals
The Décor
The Dress Code
After 11 year of doing events Timeless was the first time Id every asked people to dress up and boy was it fun!
In a nutshell lots of hard work and the efforts of hundreds, if not thousands, of Clubbers, DJs, Technicians, and Security coming together to make 9 very special hours!
Ru: What do you see as the hard house scenes biggest threats?
Will: Complacency. Accepting things should stay the same just because that’s what has always happened whether it’s the music, the venues we use, the quality of production, the list is endless. Only if we push will our scene live up to its unbelievable potential!
Steve: I suppose if we can’t attract enough younger people into what we are doing it will be more difficult to hold great parties but ultimately the biggest threat to the hard house scene will be if the people driving it forward, the djs, the promoters, the venues and of course the clubbers stop loving it, and I can’t see that happening.
Ru: What are the current positives of todays hard house scene?
Steve: Much of the chaff has gone leaving the real fanatics who really love this scene and who will drive it forward.
Will: It's a number of things for me:
Loads of New Music
For the first time in what seems like ages lots of new music is now being made and released. There are also loads of cool albums due for release by Tidy, Storm, Polys and Frantic, which will take the scene up a notch!
Lots of Diverse Music
Whether its Hard House, Uk Hard Trance or Hardtsyle there is so much divcersity there is always something for everyone who prefers the hard way for their nightlife!
Amazing crowds
The passion and excitement at Hard House Clubs is thrilling at the moment. The buzz when acts like Cally Gage, Alex Kidd, Andy Farley, Cally & Juice and Andy Whitby came on at Timeless was stunning! People were even headbanging and pogoing to Alex Kidd! And boy did people make an effort with the outfits! Big thank you to Twisted Bliss for an amazing show as Frantic’s Official Dancers!
New DJs
Im so excited about all the new DJs coming through! Its great to see people like Kutski, Cally, Whitby, Alex Kidd and more headlining events for the first time and tearing down all the rules of our scene and remaking them for a very BIG 2008!
Its brilliant to see DJs like Frisky, Elvis, Caz Wood, Matt Pickup & Andy Rise, AudioHeadz Scott Fo Shaw, and Steve O Brady snapping at the heels of the big guys!
Really excited about DJs like Morgan, Rodi Styles and Vandall who have already left a big impression out of London
Venues
Back at wicked venues like Brixton Academy, Koko, Magna and threading like a river into every major city and town in the UK!
Ru: This question is for Steve... For you, what separates Frantic from other hard house promotions?
Steve: After almost 11 years at the top Frantic are really untouchable. This is not luck that has done this but Will and the Team’s massive dedication, energy and drive. Plus an uncanny knack of always delivering what large amounts of people want.
Ru: And the same question for Will; what separates Twist from other hard house promotions?
Will: Dedication. Drive. And that’s just Jenny and Steve and the Team!
Great, great, great DJs. A crowd like no other! Boy do these people go HARD!
Ru: It seems to me that, certainly for promoters, the hard house scene is quite political - discuss:
Steve: No more so than any other area. If you work in an office or a garage I’m sure there are politics, where there are people you get politics.
Ru: Its great to see Frantic and Twist come together and Hard Nation the latest in a number of recent jointly run promotions you’ve laid on. Its fair to say though that its not always been as harmonious between you two, has it? What’s changed? How did you kiss and make up? Who made the first move?
Steve: LOL, it’s probably never been as bad as it may have sometimes looked. I suppose I was the new kid on the block and bounded in like an over excited new puppy, peeing and pooing all over the kitchen floor. I’m now a well behaved 5 year old dog ( still got a bite though). Will and I have always had respect for each other and what we do. I honestly can’t remember how we got to this position, I just know it was never really as bad as it looked.
Ru: In recent times at least, The End is not known as a hard-house venue; tell me more about the venue and why you’ve decided to hold Hard Nation there?
Steve: With Twist losing it’s home (Crash is no longer a dance venue) it forced us to look at other options for other types of parties. While having a conversation with Will about holding a Sunday afternoon party we both looked at each other and both instantly knew there was one choice we’d both love to hold a party in. After some negotiation we managed to secure the legendary End for the big bank holiday Easter blow out. For people who have never experienced this venue before you really are in for a huge treat. The sound system ranks at the top and the dj box is probably the best in London imo. For those who remember some of the amazing parties Riot used to hold there this will be an unmissable chance to re-live some great memories.
Ru: What can we expect from Hard Nation? Who is playing? How many rooms?
Steve: You can expect an absolute killer of a party with 2 rooms of hard dance, hard style, and NRG, established big names like Karim, BK, Ed Real and Justin Bourne’s penultimate London appearance will be joined by Cally Gage and Technikal, Kevin Energy and a whole host of the new breed stars. Check listings for the full massive line up.
Ru: OK, Mr Patterson, let's see what you really think about the lovely Steve! What is the most likable thing about Steve?
Will: His enthusiasm and passion every single day of the year! His love and care for our remarkable Hard House scene and all wrapped up with this a willingness to speak his mind to drive the scene forward!
Ru: And what is the one thing you’d change about Steve?
Will: I wouldn’t change him as otherwise he wouldn’t be Steve!
Ru: Good answer. What has been Steve’s biggest fashion faux pas?
Will: That Chelsea Top
Ru: If Steve was a patron saint of a town or city that city would be...
Will: London as he sums up the mad and frankly thrilling city we all love!
Ru: Steve is like an Easter Egg because...
Will: He always has something hidden inside which ends up being the next great party idea !
Ru: OK Steve, same for you: What is the most likeable thing about Will?
Steve: His cheeky little grin and his enthusiasm!
Ru: What is the one thing you’d change about Will?
Steve: I’d give him a couple of extra inches, afterall most men would not refuse that would they?!
Ru: What has been Will’s biggest fashion faux pas?
Steve: Sitting in a bath with a tea towel on your head is not a good look but then he did buy the same jacket as my partner so he must be quite kool!
Ru: If Will was a type of car he’d be....
Steve: With 11 years at the top he can only be a vintage silver cloud Rolls Royce – in perfect condition of course, ready for the next 100,000 miles.
Ru: If Will was a patron saint of a town or city that city would be...
Steve: It would have to be Rio De Janeiro – The city that throws the biggest and best parties.
Ru: Will is like an Easter Egg because...
Steve: Once you bite through his outer shell the squidgy bits inside are irresistible to most people!
Ru: Awww! Thank you both! We'll see you at Hard Nation on Easter Sunday!
